Apparition

Apparition is a tote bag developed for ECCO Leather around the company’s experimental leather of the same name, created through a treatment process using oils and glycerin to achieve an unusual translucent appearance. Although visually distinctive, the material presented several technical limitations, making it difficult to sew, glue or construct using conventional leather manufacturing techniques.
Inspired by the traditional Japanese Furoshiki — a square piece of fabric traditionally used to wrap and carry objects — the bag was developed as a single folded square sheet, held together only through two clips attaching the handle to the leather.
Rather than concealing the material’s limitations, the project developed a construction system directly shaped by its behaviour and constraints.
